Decent pump but watch out for bent seals

Both metal seals are bent. They were probably folded in the original packaging and bent together in such a way that it looks as if they were made that way. Just note that they must be flat to seal. I gently tapped directly on the anvil and covered all the metal surfaces with shims as it's a pretty easy job when it's leaking. Those who are less mechanically inclined may wish to purchase new gaskets as they are not expensive. So far the pump itself is fine. The design of the pump itself looks…

There were no gaskets in the kit

The biggest problem is that as said, there were no gaskets in the kit. I had to go to the parts store and pick up the ones that really suck since I paid for that water pump WITH Gaskets. It's also mispackaged by Gates. It's just in a huge box with nothing around it except a plastic bag. So he goes around and pokes a hole in the top of the box. This is definitely what you want to do with your fresh and important part. And no, the hole was NOT big enough for the gaskets to fall out. They…

Broken thread on the thermostat housing - solved!

The main complaint in the reviews is the breaking of the bolts of the thermostat housing. The spec calls for 11 ft-lbs, which is the maximum torque for this small screw. Where Gates screwed up is the length of the bolt. The stock bolt is about 1/4" longer, which is a noticeable difference from the aluminum threads in the case. Personally, I used some RTV and downgraded the torque to 8 ft-lbs and used the stock bolts. If it starts to leak, I can always go back and tighten the bolts to 11 ft lbs.

  • handy thing
Cons
  • there are nuances

The thermostat screw is broken in the pump housing!

This product looked amazing at first glance. It turned out to be a quality production, brand new in sealed packaging. I installed the pump and tightened the six mounting bolts, everything is fine. I then put the thermostat and housing back in place and began tightening the bolts to 11 ft-lbs as recommended. One screw tightened very well, but the second loosened the threads in the pump housing (before I even hit 11 pounds). What a disgusting moment! All that work and total dependence on that…

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled

Let's see if we get lucky

It was a lot cheaper than the original part so I decided to give it a try. The one I had wasn't good. The bolt on the thermostat housing stripped the internal threads before it even reached the required 11 ft-lbs of torque. Also, there was an incredible amount of flux inside the hull where the pipes connected to the hull. I was able to clean the flux out of the two tubes of the heater lines, but I couldn't get into the upper intake tube. With a rolled up paper towel I was able to press it…

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model

FAIL! . LESS THAN 400 MILES!. A leak!

FAIL ! . Ordered and installed in December 2020. Everything was working fine until a week ago. This water pump has done about 400 miles. The truck is not suitable for everyday use. Major failure. If you photograph the removed water pump you can see pitting and rebuilding on the back of the impeller shell, see fig. My guess is that due to temperature and pressure fluctuations, water is seeping through pitting and/or possibly a bad o-ring on the impeller shell. And of course, this is not a Revain
