Quality Belts Matter

Installation of Kia Rio 2009 in less than 3 hours. It's not at all difficult to install just the necessary basic mechanical tools. It is worth buying a quality belt for an interference engine. If not, when you break the motor, it's done.

Pros
  • Absolutely Amazing!
Cons
  • Secret

I changed the timing belt and water pump on a Kia Rio.

Timing belt and water pump replaced on Kia Rio. Much easier than you think. Hundreds saved by doing this at the retailer or store. I just followed the instructions on youtube.

Pros
  • Absolute legend
Cons
  • Slightly torn

Not satisfied, failed at 50,000km

My wife was driving when the engine just died, tried to start and nothing. Finally lugged it home after realizing the belt had snapped after only 50,000 uses. Gates says it has a 60,000 service interval guarantee This is the third belt on the car, the first two were factory and looked fine when removed. Waiting for a response to a complaint.

Pros
  • New
Cons
  • I won't tell

Total disappointment from what I thought was a reliable company

I have trusted Gates belts for many years but not anymore. After 10,000 kilometers my timing belt broke for some reason. The belt was properly tensioned with a gauge according to factory specifications and both idler pulleys were replaced at the same time (along with the water pump, which is not relevant here). The Gates guarantee only applies if the belt is installed at a workshop and they refuse to cover all other costs (even towing). Luckily the engine wasn't damaged when the belt broke…

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Some bugs

DO NOT BUY! on parts

I installed this Gates timing belt kit professionally and the mechanic followed the instructions very closely; Almost a month later I was driving and the engine suddenly stopped and would not start. I took my 2006 KIA Rio back to the shop to find that the new timing belt had completely come undone and the timing belt tensioner had come loose and gone. When removing the cylinder head, all the valves were bent and the intake valves in the 2nd cylinder were pierced. I hate to believe the positive…

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Expensive

5 stars but read my review!

Installed this Gates kit on my sister's Hyundai Accent 08 with 69,000 miles. 38 dollars. Seems too cheap! It appears to be a quality belt, but I think the original belt is even better compared to a new one. But for money. You can't go wrong. The kit installs easily (simply carefully align the crank and cam marks to the indicated locations and double check. However, in hindsight and after a very thorough inspection of the almost 7 year old original belt I would recommend the OEM belt to 90,000…
