Advantages: - Easily suitable for small aquariums. - Extra sponge Cons: - Lets air through the seams (design flaw). I tried to tape the seams at the leak site but then another seam opens up. This is very annoying. The sponge is too buoyant and the filter reclines. This actually causes air to flow out of the water intake. This completely eliminates any filtering. By tilting the sponge in a more even direction, I can see dirt rolling right off the sponge, which means the suction is very weak…

Great for controlling the flow of water!

I definitely like these filters for my males because they don't move the water much (because males feel better when standing). But they don't keep my tanks that clean. Therefore, it is still important to do frequent water changes. As I've tried to reduce this - due to travel - I can't say you can rely on them to keep a small (3.5 gallon) tank clean for more than 5 days. I've needed something to circulate good bacteria and get all the algae to grow since trying to grow opae ula shrimp rescue.
