You can spend around $30 on a 500GB SSD these days, and it will certainly give you the biggest performance boost for your money, but by installing a new hard drive, cloning an old hard drive, or Installing a new operating system can be more of a challenge for some people. Verdict: It's by no means as good as an SSD, but if you have a commodity Intel-based (7th gen or newer) system like Dell or HP without an SSD and all you want is around $60 and spend less than 5 minutes total upgrade time to…

Fills the required role that the market demands with some caveats.

I am using this to help my 4TB WD Black hard drive which is mainly used for gaming. I have a 256GB Samsung 850 Pro boot drive. The big draw here is that you can use Optane to cache secondary storage, which to my knowledge is the only consumer solution that allows you to do this. The caveat is that you need Coffee Lake to use Optane in secondary storage, which seems lazy to me. In any case this works well, it would be nice to have 64GB and/or 128GB solutions to be able to cache entire AAA…

Bought to speed up the drive

I bought this optional module to speed up my 8TB secondary drive. I saw a video about how easy it is to speed up your drive if you have an 8th gen Intel processor and decided to give it a try. I installed the module, went through the setup process and now my drive is running faster! After power cycling my system, I open the Intel Optane application and see that it is about to remove the Optane memory from my system. I didn't initiate this at all and I'm not sure what's going on. I'm waiting for

Ticket to technology hell

If you like pain, buy an Intel Optane module for your laptop! Only Intel could get away with tormenting its customers like this. I bought a 16GB module which is easy to install and struggled to get around the reliability limitations of this product for 3 months mostly without success. Supporting software limitations, confusing and conflicting recommendations, and Intel updates. Downloads posted on their website and the associated blue screen of death and boot failure along with corrupted…

Not easy to set up but very happy with the results

Requires a clean install to install. I don't think you can enable Optane on a system you're already running. Also, you have to jump through some hoops; For example, with at least 5MB of unallocated disk space - you need to format the drive and leave some free space at the end, I think this also requires Win10. DEF read the user manual (which I had to look up online as it wasn't in the box) before doing anything with this product. BUT once you've got everything set up and activated, there's a…

Intel Optane now supports secondary memory

With the new Intel application update, you can now use secondary memory to speed up Intel Optane. I have a small SSD running Windows 10 and then I have a 500GB Barracuda for secondary storage with Intel Optane with no issues. This is great for a budget build and will help your cheaper, larger mechanical storage run faster as a larger SSD can be expensive. for you, but for builders on a budget, this is a must-have. I'm using Crystaldiskmark for testing and if you see the first image with Intel…

I'll update if I ever get it working.

ATTENTION! This chip is for HDD, not SSD! This chip AND the program have been fighting me since day 1! I got it for a crazy price so there's no point in refunding it but oh my god it's such a waste of time! At this point in my installation experience, I understand that this is a pre-built add-on. this is the BIGGEST confusion I've encountered. over HUNDREDS of help posts on hundreds of forums and I still haven't found an answer to my problem. So I will try to make this review as simple as…
