Item holding hook is only 1" front to back; not strong enough to hold anything other than a hat with a strap or a jacket with a hanging loop. I was hoping to make the hook deep enough to hold a 50ft extension spool; However, I probably couldn't hold more than 4 loops, meaning the loops will be around 12 feet long. I could also just fold the extension onto the floor. Luckily I have 4 hats with loops and can use hangers for these hats; little else I have can cling to them.

Contrary to what other reviewers say, they snap in and hold up well. It's not particularly strong metal, so all you have to do is pry off the top before putting it on the shelf.
