Description of πŸ”§ Irwin Tools 3016021 Single High Speed: Precision, Durability, and Reliability Combined

Ideal for drilling in tough metal, including heavy-duty abrasive alloy metal drilling on hardened steel. Made from industrial grade High-Speed Steel for increased durability. 8% Cobalt alloy is heat and abrasion-resistant. 135-degree split-point tip starts drilling immediately with less force and eliminates "walking" across the work surface. Bit has a straight shank.

Does not hold cutting edge

I bought this to make 4 screw holes in mild steel - 20 gauge sheet metal, double, about 2mm total depth. I used cutting oil and a Makita 3/8 hand drill (love this drill - 25+ years of use). The first hole went well enough, but then it all went downhill. Hole 4 was a miserable cycle of push and catch, push and catch. In addition, the reduced-diameter shank is smooth and without grooves, which makes it easier to work with the jaws of the chuck. It would be hopeless for stainless steel drilling…

Pros
  • Ideal for drilling in carbide including high performance abrasive alloy for drilling in hardened steel
Cons
  • Expensive

One broke, the other didn't

I bought four of these as I tend to drill a lot of a certain diameter holes. The first thing I used was drilling through nice soft 6061 aluminum. The piece was about 3/16" thick. The drill bit broke before it even got into the metal! And yes, I used lube and not too fast or drilled too deep. The second practice ended with no issues and ran about 40 more without incident. So it looks like they hit or miss.Quality control issue?I don't know until it finally wears out/brokes and I have to get the…

Pros
  • The drill has a straight shank
Cons
  • Poor instructions

Amazing cobalt drill bits

I've only used one of these drill bits for a couple of jobs but I can tell they are straight away of excellent quality. For those considering the value for money of a cobalt drill versus a cheaper titanium drill, let me share some more information. I used to work as a heavy structural mechanic for a major US airline. This work required the removal of many of the titanium fasteners. Guess which bit we used to take the fasteners off? So; Cobalt. A regular steel drill will not even mark a titanium

Pros
  • 135 degree split tip drill starts drilling immediately with less effort and eliminates "walking" on work surface
Cons
  • Not sure
