Too tight on my Victorinox chef's knife

Seems sturdy but I found it impossible to use. It was too tight for my Victorinox chef's knife. I almost cut myself trying to stab the blade of the knife into the crossguard and gave up trying as it was too dangerous to continue. Perhaps someone who has used this successfully can explain if there is a special trick to safely inserting the blade and I could try again before throwing it.

Pros
  • Confident

The perfect blade protection for every chef's knife!

Excellent product with a perfect design. Suitable for almost every knife size. The knife slides in and out at the top to keep it from dulling as you pull the knife in and out. It fits all of my 8" chef's knives and also fits shorter blades. It doesn't matter if the blade is thick or thin, long or short; it still fits. The knife is easy to use and can be removed quickly and easily without becoming dull. This is the best design! I use them on all my essential knives to protect them and keep meโ€ฆ

Mercer > Cangshan/Dexter/Mundial/Everpride

They are very different and much better than Cangshan/Dexter/Mundial/Everpride Knife Guard. The latter keeps your knives weak and slips off easily. Having the guards of Cangshan, Dexter, Mundial, and Everpride before there is nothing else between them. All of them are common. Yes, Mercer Guards are a bit more expensive, but it's worth the extra cost. As far as the felt liner goes, your knives don't care much for it, and the Mercer guard feels very similar to inserting a knife into the guardโ€ฆ

Bad design is the best in the kitchen and dining room

I've been reading reviews of a very sharp Mercer bread knife and thought I needed a sheath in part because I didn't think a 10 inch blade would fit in my knife box and knife block. I was wrong. It fits well so I don't need a knife guard, but I tried it anyway and found it very difficult to get the blade in. The fit is too tight and the bread knife blade is difficult to insert. Ironically I'm afraid of cutting myself trying to insert the blade into the guard. I can't use it. Of course, theโ€ฆ

But great knife bag. extremely unsafe to use.

Knife not easy to attach. The design is a giant shell clip, not a sheath per se. You cannot insert it from one end due to pinching. If you try, you risk the knife popping out and cutting through your arm with the force required to insert it. Loading from the top is much safer. but still dangerous as the clip is very tight and the "sheath" is very narrow so it wobbles slightly when you push to insert the knife; You can cut your arm again and try to keep it stable. I highly recommend using aโ€ฆ

Use knife sheaths, holders and guards with care

*Added after contacting Mercer Customer Service: I still believe this product can be dangerous. Mercer pointed out to me that this Revain page has a safety video (although it's way down the page) and the box should have a picture on the front showing how I use it safely. I advised Mercer (and they seemed receptive to feedback) that a simple, removable sticker on the product itself with instructions/warnings for use would be effective in preventing injury. I recently injured myself using aโ€ฆ

I need this for cutlery and knife accessories

Can't comment on durability, strength or value for money as it's still fairly new and time will only tell those 3 things. I recently decided that I really need to invest in better knives, I use these really cheap knives from Chinese hardware stores most of my life, but they don't sharpen very well and don't "stay sharp". long before I die (my wish list) I was dying to have at least 2 really good (pretty good, I don't know what to call really good) knives and bought two. I love them, I sit andโ€ฆ
