Try Sous Vide for Small Appliances

If you've always wanted to try sous vide to see what it's all about, but want to keep it under $100, try this gem. It's the same as Anova but without Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, so you'll have to set it up manually. Not everything is as difficult as you make it out to be. Monoprice is a good company. Get this and go to YouTube and watch some shows cooking what you like. I love prime rib, steaks, roasts and eggs. You can use a pot as a container but I would suggest using a cooler as it is strong and…

Great product if you just want to cook.

I like the simplicity of this article. It does not connect to the phone and has an adjustment of only half a degree. Do you need these things? It takes a little longer to reach the desired temperature, especially above 165°F, but it will hold the temperature when it does. I've cooked corned beef for 42 hours, flatiron steak for 24 hours, strips for 2 hours with no problems. Individual cheesecakes, fake Starbucks, sealed jars, the best asparagus you've ever tasted. Everything I've thrown at this

Pros
  • Excellent design
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

Great sous vide at a very reasonable price

I have had this precision sous vide cooker for about two weeks now and have used it 3 times - once each to cook rib eye steak, pork chops and shrimp. . The recipes I used are from Lisa Fedderman's Sous Vide at Home website and Kenji Lopez-Alt's Serious Eats website (both are great guides). What impresses the most is the accuracy of the temperature control and its stability. For example, set to 131 degrees (F), it stayed the same; I checked the temperature with a good quality thermometer - the…

Sous vide is our new favorite cooking method

Sous vide is our new favorite cooking method. We simultaneously cooked beef tenderloin, tenderloin and seafood for a great surf and peat dinner. We immediately bought a matching rubber tub and lid, but decided against the insulating cover. You don't really need it as water holds the temperature very well. In terms of power consumption, I turned it on during my last 3 hours of cooking and it used less than 0.75kWh. That's 6 cents here in Texas. Cooking a steak is so easy it's even fun. Simply…

Not as advertised. - Special Household Appliances

I bought this because of the cost and performance directly comparing to Anova Precision. I don't need stupid WIFI or Bluetooth so that seemed like a great deal. I compared it directly to an old Anova Precision Circulator. The pump just doesn't produce anywhere near what the Anova Precision does. Compared to the specs it's 2.25 gallons (8.50 liters) per minute and the Anova pump: 2.1 - 2.4 gallons per minute 7-8 liters per minute. So on paper, this model should perform just as well as Anova…

Let 'em eat steak!

I've been a culinary student all my life, which means I love food. Sous vide was a method I could never afford given the expensive food bath fixtures of the past. Now, with the advent of these immersion cookers with electronic displays and digital temperature control, I've decided to add this tool to my kitchen. After watching the Monoprice video and speaking to a foodie friend, I purchased this Monoprice model during the occasional sale. Wireless temperature monitoring or a built-in video…

Great introduction to sous vide, cheaper than DIY!

When I first learned about the sous vide technique I couldn't justify the cost of the Anova or Joule; So I originally wanted to go the DIY route. But like all home improvement jobs, there's a cheap way and a RIGHT way. Building an immersion circulator suitable for proper sous vide cooking would cost as much as buying an Anova. Then this guy popped up in my search and he was on sale for $70. First off, this is definitely a copy of an Anova product, but it doesn't support Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. For…
