PerTronix 40001 Flame-Thrower High-Performance 40,000V 1.5Ω Ignition Coil Review

High quality ignition coil. Works well. There is concern about the 1.5 ohm coil resistance as when replacing the PerTronix electronics the old external coil resistance is not recommended for use with this PerTronix coil (I left the external resistance on the machine and just bypassed it ie the resistor short-circuited ). I think the primary DC resistance of 1.5 ohms (about half of the old setup) is still fine for my wiring. I hope I'm not wrong.

I'm cautious with my rating here as my first Pertronix coil - this particular model - failed. The error occurred on a Pertronix installation on a bone machine in a 1958 Ford; It took me ages to trace it back to the coil, but a quick swap with a stock Ford unit showed that the Pertronix actually worked intermittently and then stopped working altogether. I guess it was once in a lifetime so I bought another of these spools to replace the original spool. I love getting away from the old scoring…

Like the other reviewer, I finally traced my intermittent stall/stall problem to this coil from a 1958 Ford 352 FE engine. Last year it started disappearing and stuttering when warmed up. This year it has frankly become unreliable and died several times as it would not restart until it cooled down.
