small. It was my fault for not reading the product details better but I was expecting the mat to be a standard size of 8 1/2" x 11" but it is actually around 6" x 6". That works great. My son accidentally put the tip of a 3D pen on the mat while working on his design for about 2 minutes and it didn't melt or deform at all. Very good quality and the templates are great for creating basic shapes which can then be assembled into objects.

This is a great product if you just starting out with a 3D pen. My daughter and I are learning how to use a 3D pen and this mat really helps create perfect squares, circles and even triangles because of the ridges. Or, if you just want hands-free, you can flip the mat over and use the smooth backing (not sure if that's on purpose lol). Finger guards are also nice (no pun intended) when you need to remove stubborn filament from a very hot tip. Overall very happy with this purchase.

Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of this. I think it does a good job of keeping the heat off the desk or table, but it's really hard to draw on it. The pen's hot filament follows the pen instead of resting on the silicone surface. Because the silicone repels the liquid moments of the thread so well that there is no tension. I like the idea of painting on it once the piece is secured enough to "paint in the air" but then I don't know what the point is. If the bottom was fabric maybe I could use
