The best test kits for fish and aquatic animals

I use Salifert tests for all my test kits. They're easy to use, reliable, accurate, and still one of the most affordable hobbyist options out there. Couldn't be happier.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Weight

Not easy to use for aquarium test kits

Interpretation of the results is very difficult. I've tested 3 times and still don't know the final results. The instructions are not clear. I won't get any more of these.

Pros
  • Weight
Cons
  • Nothing here

Seems to be a great test kit. Color changes are very easy to see. The problem is that the 1mm syringe becomes unreadable after a single use and cleaning. I cleaned it carefully after the first use, and when I tried it the second time I used it, I noticed that all the numbers in the top half of the scale were gone. So the injection is no longer good. The set is new, used once and now in the trash. The numbers came off WAY too easy.

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • Useless features

Two possible moments for human error

Like all titration tests, this test results in a color change in the water sample when the KH value is reached. However, it uses the syringe reading to tell you what the dKH is, not the number of drops. It's hard enough to get high accuracy on these titration tests without adding a second complication to make sure your syringe is properly filled. This overly complex approach to testing surprises me as Salifert's tests are usually simpler and very reliable. .

Very accurate and easy to use!

Salifert makes some of the best aquarium test kits. They cost a bit more but tend to be more accurate than cheaper API kits. However, they are not as difficult to use as some other high quality test kits. If you keep a reef aquarium you know that it is important to maintain proper levels of calcium, alkalinity and magnesium. The Salifert KH/Alk test kit is easy to use and delivers very accurate results. I checked the Salifert kit test results again with the Hanna Checker and got almost the same
