I love Shapton stones, they remove steel faster than anything I've tried and let me tell you I've tried several over the years. They also remain much flatter than traditional water stones; The downside, of course, is that they're harder to straighten. They sell a diamond grinder for about $300, yes I declined and just use much cheaper diamond grindstones and it works great. Fine grits like this are particularly good for two reasons: they don't absorb water and therefore don't need to be crushed like waterstones in the pond, they stay flatter and don't wear out as quickly as waterstones. . You may think that diamond stones also have these qualities and cost less, but I can tell you that
