Review on Shapton Glass Stone 8000 Grit - Superior High-Performance Sharpening Tool by Robert Aiono

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best fine stone you can get! Ideal for fine woodworking!

I have tried many sharpeners. DMT diamond stones, Japanese water stones, oil stones. But these new glass stones are changing the world of sharpening for carpenters around the world! Fine grits like this are particularly good for two reasons: they don't absorb water and therefore don't need to be crushed like waterstones in the pond, they stay flatter and don't wear out as quickly as waterstones. . You may think that diamond stones also have these qualities and cost less, but I can tell you that diamond stones just aren't as good as these! Rougher diamond stones are great, but at higher grit they really suffer and usually scratch the blade instead of polishing with shavings like Shapton glass stones do. which stay flat because they don't wear out and you can use them to flatten water stones. At around 4000 grit diamond stones aren't as good and I prefer regular waterstones like kingstones (they come out of flat only slightly faster than shaptons and don't cut as fast as they need to be sharpened before use (But they're cheaper, easier to flatten, last longer because they're so thick, and you can use them on both sides!) It just stays flat longer, cuts really fast, doesn't scratch, and doesn't need to be soaked. This stone seriously cuts like a 4000 grit stone but still polishes like an 8000! The size of these stones is ideal, wide enough for planer knives and long enough. This stone is worth saving money for!
