I have a 1990 Ford E-350 XL and needed to replace a cover that I had lost the keys to. Yes, there is a way to break the cap and remove the old one. This one works the same as the old one. The key is only used to remove the cover and then pulled out to replace and lock it. The green color-coding for diesel is a nice touch. for stations with accompanying persons.

This cap (P/N 10501D) fits the 2000 Super-Duty 7.3 Power Stroke. The lid locks without a key - just turn it until it clicks THREE times. The key is only needed when trying to open the lid. (Note that this cap can also be used as a regular gas cap if you don't always need to latch the gas cap - just screw it in until it's snug or just clicks once.) I have a 2011 Golf TDI and although there is a lockable fuel filler flap the effect of adding petrol instead of diesel is inevitable and expensive. Come with 2 keys, put 1 on my master keys and 1 on a spare set. The only suggestion I can make is if you're one of those people who has a small stick-sized key ring that locks the gas cap isn't for you, or keep them separate. Perfect fit - wasn't sure if it would fit my 1995 diesel camper van but it worked.
