Very thin, visible marks on stainless steel

When dealing with stainless steel I wanted something that would make visible and accurate marks that I could see without first being marked with a sharpener. It does very well. It's obvious that all that Starrett is the beauty of the ball. Warning: DO NOT carry this item in a bag. It will try to kill you. I put it in my shirt pocket while drilling a hole, sneezed, and now I have a nipple piercing.

Another quality tool from Starrett, but...

A nice tool with a small flaw. As previously mentioned, the vise jaw that holds the tip of the scribe in place must be tightened very firmly to prevent the scribe from falling to the ground. Once tightened, the knurled nut is very difficult to loosen. I fixed this problem, hopefully forever, by removing the knurled nut and applying a tiny "don't glue" mark to the tip of the vise jaws. It is now very easy to tighten and loosen the chuck.

Starrett tools always meet your expectations.

I have never seen a Starrett tool that didn't meet my expectations. They are always good and usually better than most other tools. Additional costs are usually, if not always, acceptable given the quality of the product. Update January 20, 2021: I made the mistake of marking a very precise point in the center of a 16" plywood circle that I cut with a jigsaw. The mark left by direct pressing was too faint to see, so I wiggled the pen a bit to enlarge it. This force was enough to snap off the…

Great Marker!: Marking Tools

Great Marker! I've used it for a variety of tasks including working with electronics (moving parts of the Molex cables to keep them in the case), marking the center on the metal for my lathe, etc. Size 70BX/70B (3/8 -inch grip) more comfortable to use than the 70A/70AX (1/4"). To clarify, the "X" in the model name means it has a carbide tip. Also, the 70B and 70BX tips are interchangeable, so you can switch to a carbide tip, hardened steel tip and vice versa. It's a shame replacement tips…

Typical Starrett quality tool

This scriber is typical "Starrett" quality. It's amazing how they got the tungsten carbide tip to such a sharp "needle point". I mean the one I got is literally as sharp as any needle I've ever seen. However, he still seems strong enough. I did amazing work on both aluminum and stainless steel and the fine needle was not damaged. My only issue with this marker is the force required to turn the knurled "chuck" to keep the nib locked. Once I've tightened the chuck just enough to keep the tip from

Buy this one here: Marking Tools

I confess I love this little one. I use it to engrave a comic book design onto a stainless steel magnetic whiteboard surface. I simply took a light green/neon green marker and covered the surface of the steel, traced my drawing with carbon paper and dropped under a very bright light to start scratching. When I'm done, the nail polish remover will remove the marker and I'll have a much cooler sticky note board than the old cork board with the nasty whiteboard everyone else has. Note that this…

Don't be clumsy! Carbide is very brittle!

The Starrett name has a reputation that far outstrips its cheaper competitors, although few can match it. I bought this to replace a hardened scriber that became dull when lined on stainless steel. I've had it for less than a month and it's been a game changer ever since. I'll admit that the first day I used it, I was hesitant to apply pressure when drawing lines to the point where there were no clear markers. Having said that, I found out exactly how much pressure was too much when, within the
