This adapter with USB power cable worked with my laptop (VGA output) and HD monitor with only HDMI ports. VGA resolution is not converted to HD; Nothing will happen. I just didn't want to raise anyone's expectations. This is a great adapter and a good buy at this price. I highly recommend it.

Works well with headless Linux computers that only have a VGA output on the motherboard. This device is designed for systems connected to a monitor with HDMI inputs (ie analogue -> digital). By the way, the USB power plug shows up as a USB-C media sound card, and the sound from the computer works right out of the box. A huge improvement over lugging around a VGA-capable monitor for these configurations.

Never doubt StarTech products. Used for 32 inch LED TV as conference room monitor. The quality is excellent. Presenting in PowerPoint and Excel couldn't be better. Best of all, no drivers are required, which is very convenient. Tested on multiple laptops and none have failed so far. The audio was set automatically and the quality is excellent. The USB extension is very useful on a laptop with ports on the opposite side of the VGA output.

After reading many reviews about this product and other similar products, I realized that my chances of it working perfectly are very slim. Item arrived earlier than promised, plug and play within minutes. All set up by myself by connecting my old home desktop with VGA output to a new digital TV with HDMI. The sound from the TV is better than the old speakers used with the VGA monitor. Don't forget to buy an HDMI male to male cable, this is required to connect the item to your TV's HDMI socket.

The adapter works well, at least initially. We don't use an audio or USB port in our conference rooms, but the adapter works very well with an HDMI cable from a TV and a VGA port from a laptop. I needed to convert the 1280x800 (optimal) resolution from my Dell Latitude E4200 to HDMI for presentations. I first bought a cheaper SYBA IO Crest box (SY-ADA31025) from Revain which was described as supporting this resolution. I use this adapter to connect an old laptop to a 1080p TV, using the computer mainly as a media player. The adapter has excellent 1080p picture quality. Also very handy is that it behaves like a USB sound card and automatically sends audio over HDMI. Works fine WITH ONE BIG EXCEPTION. If you broadcast it at "normal" resolutions - 800x600, 1024x768, 1680x1050, 720p, etc. - then the signal will pass through and the quality will be excellent. However, when connected to a PC, the 720x400 plain text mode used by the BIOS *does not* pass through the adapter.
