It's just not good for starters and alternators

This starter just gave us trouble. It just went out again and unfortunately we can't send it back. We've waited a long time.

Pros
  • Starters and parts
Cons
  • Some little things

More power than expected

Does what it's supposed to do (too well). I tore up the plastic gears that came with it, so I replaced them with a metal gear from an old starter motor. The aluminum keyway that secures the flywheel on the crankshaft is therefore replaced with a steel key. Now it works great. Really strong starter, really impressed.

Pros
  • Starters and alternators
Cons
  • Concise instructions

Not cheap but mediocre.

It works, but the drive wheel is made of plastic. Comes with two, one attached and I think an extra in case one breaks. Doesn't inspire me much confidence. I'll leave the metal in place of the old one I replaced. Also, what is cleanliness? The only definition I found was a town in England; One of the review questions concerns cleanliness. Well, besides, it's worked 6 times already.

  • Not everything fits

The motor had a plastic gear.

The motor had a plastic gear but my old starter had a metal gear. I removed the metal gear from the old motor and put it in the new one. This change took about 30 minutes. It takes 12-15 turns to crank the starter. This starter has been identified as the correct one for my engine, but it does not appear to be the correct engine.

Cons
  • Not bad

Have used this item for approximately 18 months.

This starter motor worked on my John Deere Z225 with a 18.5hp Briggs OHV engine, however it should have had a steel or bronze gear instead of a plastic gear as my engine has a steel flywheel. From my research, the 16 tooth plastic gear on my engine doesn't last very long, so if the plastic gear fails I'll have to put an old bronze or steel 14 tooth gear on this starter. I have run the engine 5 or 6 times and this starter has worked perfectly every time. If you need a new starter make sure it…
