Functional, good quality

So far I've used this for mead and cider and it works great. It fits my hydrometer and while it's not exactly premium lab equipment, the quality for the price is excellent. I could see it last forever with care.

It just works in the analyzer

Easy to use, easy to calibrate. After calibrating, I found that it matched the $400 digital block my friend was using exactly. Although I use it to measure Brix, I also like the SG readings, which were accurate even with my trusty hydrometer. Use it in the field to determine grape yield and in winemaking to calculate the addition of sugar during fermentation. Plus it's easy to focus so I don't have to look through my reading glasses!

Pros
  • Brilliantly made
Cons
  • The list goes on.

Quick and easy to use, just a few drops needed to test. Using an areometer, I only checked the beginning and end of fermentation. This tool makes it quick and easy and doesn't require much seasoning, allowing me to check gravity every day. It also makes it easy to check the density before and during the boil. Worth the price.

Seems to work!: test measure and verify

I used this for my landrace watermelon breeding project (some of which are low sugar lemon melon hybrids and hybrids [lemon melon x homemade watermelon]). The Brix meter seems to be working, and while I don't know if it's accurate, it appears to be. The comparison requires access to a known good Brix meter. Many citrus melons have a sugar content in the 2-4% range. Homemade watermelon seems to measure at 10% (lower limit) and above. So yeah, it seems to be working great! Easy to use. Justโ€ฆ

Got a bad one: Substance Analysis Instruments

Revised Review: RC007 has GREAT customer service. They contacted me and wanted to fix everything. They immediately sent a replacement refractometer; This is aligned correctly. I am rating 4 stars until I have a chance to review further. But the new one is clear and properly aligned and initially zeroed fairly well. Seems promising! First review (1 star) Mine was obviously assembled incorrectly; The line was not horizontal but at an angle of about 30 degrees. I took it apart and the rod that the

What a versatile tool!

I've never used tools like this but they seem to work great! I figured this would only work on clear liquids. It turns out it works on milk and fruit "pulp" samples too. This is perfect for what I wanted to use it for. You won't need more than 1/4 mashed blueberries to get a reading. The reading (the line between the "white area" and the "blue area") is very discrete (or at least very easy to interpolate where the "line" would be within 1 degree Brix). Not only that, the instrument also appears

Perfect for home brewing!

I was very skeptical about buying a cheap refractometer. I used a decent quality hydrometer for many years until I lost it when I was moving last year. I was about to buy another hydrometer when I found this one. Use less liquid and get more accurate results? Yes, please! But I doubted how accurate it would be. Haven't used it yet with anything I've brewed, but I've tested and calibrated it with distilled water and the result was almost perfectly zero. I've tried a few different sugary drinksโ€ฆ

Ideal for pre-cooking and initial density measurements

Update - User Error! I have corrected this review as I have found that this device actually fits my classic hydrometer and tilt hydrometer. Refractometers are not accurate when there is alcohol in solution, so the final density must be measured with a standard hydrometer or using an equation based on OG and a correction factor. I've tried the Brew Father calculator, it works for the most part, but I'm sticking with the slope values for the FG. Given the viewing accuracy compared to the secondโ€ฆ
