Spiral Coils are the best way to repair stripped threads when you don't have the space to drill, tap and install a larger screw. If you absolutely must stick to the same screw size, this is the way to go.

I bought this to fix a broken bolt in the transmission pan. Super easy to use and worked great. Outstanding product. I had to buy the necessary drill separately, but it wasn't difficult to find.

However I was able to use my smaller spiral coil setup to do the repair, I just ordered a smaller screw and I'm sure I'll be fine. The threads on the thermostat housing were stripped and my choice for the repair was to get a different manifold (replace by myself}, remove the manifold for much easier access (it's a 318 in a Dodge van) or repaired on site.
