Type of review

If you're working with a Honda/Acura K-Series, in my case the K20A2 engine, the installation portion of this tool is pretty much useless as the spring-loaded 'nipple' detent is also large to to properly fit the retainers onto the valve stem. This "nipple", which currently has no better term, should just be smaller so it wedges between them and pushes down, rather than snagging on the tip/top of the valve stem. I'd bet that grinding that nipple so it's smaller would work. However, the tool…

Fits GSR head but not b20

I am writing this review in the hope that it will help someone. I originally bought this to replace the valve train on an Integra GSR head. I've had my head for a few months now and I've been playing around with it a bit. It fits properly when using the board, although sometimes you have to reach to the bottom of your head to hold the flap in place and lock the latches. This tool really worked for the head of GSR. Before I had a chance to put my GSR on my head gasket went on my b20. When…

What a great tool in Valve Train Tools

This tool pulled all 16 valves out of my Toyota 2.2 head in 22 minutes. I pulled the holders out of the tool for a long time. I used a small brush handle to remove the holders from the tool. Not sure yet how the installation will go but the last time I worked on a head was 20 years ago and I borrowed an AC clamping tool from a friend. What a pain that tool was. I watched a video on YouTube after ordering. I used a 2lb hammerless hammer and simply pushed the tool against the top of the spring…

Worth its weight in gold

This is money well spent. I've just finished a job replacing a valve stem seal on a Mitsubishi Montero - the same job I helped a friend do a few years ago. This was the first time we've used a universal valve spring compressor and it took many hours of taking the compressor to different locations to get the correct angle for each valve, not to mention trying to find retainers and to replace (and lose three somewhere). in the bowels of the engine compartment). It took us a full couple of days to

bad directions. YouTube helps

I can see where some people might have trouble when using it for the first time. The instructions are really not very good. Some tips that I hope will help: The black part detaches from the handle depending on whether valve holders are installed or removed. You only need to remove the handle part, not the black part. When removing, try to compress the spring by hand first. They just want to use enough force to free the Guardians. When assembling, make sure that the black part is in the silver…

Subaru Head Service Made Easy

I refused head service at a Subaru specialty shop because I was frustrated installing springs and retainers on valve cores on an OHV Subaru. Since the local workshops were also too busy to make this 6 cylinder, I set out to find an adapter for my C-Clamp supercharger. I found this tool and love the reviews. I had no idea! What used to take me 15-20 minutes per valve sometimes took a maximum of 30 seconds. Basically this is installing the seal, spring seat, spring retainer and installing the…

Good buy for $30: Power tools

For the average handyman this is a good investment. I am a professional heavy duty (big truck) mechanic and this was my first attempt at replacing valve stem seals on a 1999 Honda Accord LX with a 2.3L SOHC engine with the cylinder head installed. This tool gave me a huge advantage in that I got the job done pretty quickly (about 3 hours) the first time. But this tool is also difficult to use, removing the guards was very easy. Installation is a little more difficult. Pushing the tool with your

The right tool for the job

I used to be afraid to disassemble the valve train on engines because all the valve spring compression tools I've seen up to this point have been cumbersome and I've heard stories that it wasn't easy. When my wife's car needed new valve stem seals I decided to fix the problem myself and research led me to this tool. I rarely give 5 star reviews, but like the valve stem seal tool kit I reviewed earlier today, this was the right tool for the job. This tool easily pulled the retainers and brackets
