I read the negative reviews on this Rotopax mount and thought these people must have just done something wrong or not serviced the locking mechanism. Well I was wrong. I didn't even have time to install it on my jeep before it broke. I opened the package, took out the lock cylinder and made sure it worked with the key. I put the lock in the bracket and that's it, it broke. I spent over an hour trying to get the lock out of the holder with the key, then the key got stuck. I then spent about 2…

Bought two locks. Keys are extremely difficult to insert into the lock and almost impossible to remove from the lock. Each lock came with two keys. I could only get one key for each lock to enter the locks, one for each didn't work at all. Working buttons barely work. It seems that they are cut incorrectly and it is very difficult to get into the castle. When I put the key in the lock, they don't turn easily. Purchased May 2020 so I've had just over a year with it. There is no visible rust and the car is garaged but has been exposed to rain and snow while driving/parking on the street. The key goes in but doesn't turn. I've tried several lock lubricants and rust removers with no success. Rust resistant metal or plastic coating could have made this lock better. Terrible lock! Seriously, don't waste your money on this mount. I risked it and regretted it. I have a regular Rotopax mount with no lock and it works. I ordered this one with a lock to protect my gas when away from my Xterra in built-up areas. The lock gave me problems from the start. Eventually I managed to insert the lock core into the bracket and after removing the lock I again had difficulty removing it. Finally pulled it out and added some WD-40 to lighten it up. Thumbs up to the people who designed this great mount/lock and thumbs down to the people who decided to price their product at a premium sell who saves the castle. A lock intended for use in a car should and can easily be made from materials that are not prone to rusting. Saving a dollar per item to increase profits is not a fair way to do business.
