Cloudier than it could be in Los Angeles!

I STRONGLY recommend rinsing this sand thoroughly and then rinsing again. Because the cloud that appears when you disturb the gravel will kill your fish. I just lost two of my rare fish to this crap. I washed and washed. I lost half to runoff, then did 3 full water changes, ran a sponge filter, used a gas station, used a stabilizer, waited a week and landed the fish. Then I changed the water again and BAM the dust cloud came back and last night my fish stopped breathing. THANK YOU SEKHEM

Might be worth reading.

Unless you start a new aquarium without a decorative layer of inert substrate to prevent nutrients from penetrating the water layer, I would recommend washing off the sand. If you're adding directly to an aquarium that already has sand in it, I recommend rinsing the sand. If you want to use this as a demo which I decided to use you can put it straight into the tank and then slowly add water after the mist clears after a few days. Those who complain of it clogging up the tank didn't wait for it…

Muddy, cloudy at first, but the plants are thriving!

Update: I saved the onyx and it's fine now, but you only have to work with one plant at a time, you can't do bulk changes or you'll still have clouds. My plants seem to love it, they are growing like crazy. Original post: I thought people were exaggerating when they complained about the dust. NO! I have washed this thing 10 times but it still gets cloudy like in the photo. THEN, when you run your filter, all that thick grey-beige dirt gets into the filter media so you have to clean it every…

Nice but if you need to clean up.

The sand is very fine, which is good for plant roots (?). HOWEVER, you will spend HOURS sieving it over and over again to remove the fine dust that accumulates during shipping! If you don't, the tank will be VERY cloudy (almost as bad as London fog lol). a plate that you place on top of the sand (one cup at a time!) to keep the aquarium from misting up again. I love the look BUT is it worth all the effort? NO! EVERY time you change the water it fogs up the entire tank and takes about 48 hours…

Works perfectly! Plants seem to like it

This stuff seems to work great. I have about an inch for every my 125 gallons under another inch or two of various substrates. All my plants are blooming. About 40% of my aquarium is filled with dense vegetation, the rest is lightly planted with various types of swords. I have not used CO2 in this tank before but have added Flourish and Flourish Excel from Seachem. My plants seem very happy with it, although I understand that Excel isn't as efficient as Co2 and that plants can't absorb it as…

I wish I could give this -100 stars because it's GARBAGE

I've had to flush it about 20 times and the water in my tank is still cloudy as gray soup. For the first two flushes, it looked like there was cement in the bucket I used for flushing (that should have been my first clue). I can't imagine how much I have to pay for all the water I used to clean up this waste product. Once in the aquarium and shaking it, one of my brand new filters broke. I got another one and the same thing happened when the sand was moved across the floor. At this point, I…

Not for me Suitable for fish and aquatic life

That was three hours of my life that I'll never get back. I read the reviews before buying but I liked the color so much that I decided to try it. It was a failed $25 experiment. The reviews warned me. Let's clarify. In my pocket I had about 1/4 (by volume) of superfine powdered sugar with the consistency of a gray powder. I spent about an hour washing 1/3 of a 15.4 lb bag out of the mix. What remained was 3/5 very very fine sand, which was NOT YET fully pulverized. The remaining 2/5 were…

Uncontrolled dust harmful to my fish

Read all the reviews on this sand before you buy. I figured that of course I could wash it just fine and the dark gray would look great in my new tank. Not right. First, it is very light, ash gray. It's a matter of preference, but I really have no idea why they called it "black". The gray spectrum is closer to white than black. Washed many times. Again and again and again. Filled up my tank carefully. Gave him a few days to let the dust settle again. But every time I did anything in the tank…
