The best purchase in my life, I will definitely buy it again.

Despite the shortcomings, it performs its functions, everything works as it should. Description and documentation are at an acceptable level, and even in 2022.

Pros
  • My first NAS server. Very cool, everything was set up quite simply. There are applications for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, can be controlled from a browser via the web. The disks can be seen over the network by regular OS features. It is convenient to backup, store pictures, share them over the network. There are all sorts of tricks, such as contacts, mail, notes - on your server. You can store movies and watch them on your TV via LAN. Works with recommended discs - fast and quiet.
Cons
  • When uploading photos through the browser, the latter at some point stops uploading them and you need to restart it. There is no technical support for 2022, they shoot all questions at once. Apps are quite old and rarely ated. Music applications - quite the bottom. Linking a phone number to an account does not work either.

A valuable purchase, some advantages!

Apple in the NAS world With its pros: Cool software, many additional packages, my favorite is Download Station, you can distribute 24/7, Media station, your office, your mail server, your chat, your server (in terms of the site, all sorts of Joomla, Apache and so on) - after WD really understand that you have your own server, albeit small. Different cons: They introduced against the 2022, stopped automatically ating the signatures of the built-in Anti-Virus. Now only manually, download…

One of the best deals, glad I bought this.

Pros: The company of brooms does not knit! Works very fast even with HDD with tiled recording. Your applications for all occasions. Management is very "user friendly"! Some cons: Goodbye Google Photo sync, hello Google! Their native applications do not want to work with remote folders.

In spite of several issues, it is still useful and operates as intended. The level of detail and documentation is adequate, even for 2022.

Pros
  • This is the first NAS I've owned. Really neat, and the framework for it all was quite straightforward. The web-based interface can be used with any of the available Mac, Windows, iOS, or Android apps. The drives are accessible over the network using standard OS tools. It's easy to save data, keep photographs safe, and distribute them all over the internet. Your server has a plethora of tricks like address books, inboxes, and memos. Movies can be saved and viewed on a TV set over a local area network. Fast and silent when using the suggested CDs.
Cons
  • After a certain amount of time has passed while uploading images through the browser, the browser will stop uploading the photos and you will need to restart it. There will be no 2022 technical support; instead, they will answer all questions simultaneously. Generally speaking, apps have been around for a long time and are infrequently used. Applications that play music are quite low-brow. The use of a phone number as a login failed as well.

Not a bad purchase, worth the money.

Some pros: The best in this price range. Reliability. Very handy software Cons: it still makes a lot of noise. But here is a design feature, nothing can be done

I was surprised by the quality for this price.

I debated whether to construct my own NAS or to purchase this one for quite some time. I'm glad I made the investment in a DS218 and have never once regretted it; there has been no need to get out the tambourine. Drive Video Audio Photo Station, DLNA, with additional disk synchronization, access via smb, and nfs, allows me to set it up and forget it, saving me a ton of time. The realtek processor and 2GB of RAM are more than adequate for normal home use; they begin to show their limits only…

Pros
  • Compact in stature, serene in tone, and ready for use after minimal time spent setting it up.
Cons
  • value, a single network jack

Not a bad product, but you can do better.

1. I have only 10 MB/s write speed via gigabit network 2. RAID 1 two WD Purple 4TB Its pros: 1. Looks OK 2. The package contained everything you need to connect 3. Manufacturer with normal support With its cons. 1. It is very difficult to set everything up 2. On android, you need to install several applications. It would be better if there was one, so you have to open several

I'm satisfied, the product is exactly as described.

There are no questions about iron. In principle, there are no questions to the OS of the storage itself. But for a device that is specialized for working with data and storing files, there are very few opportunities in terms of organizing directories and personalizing disk space. All possibilities end with "create folder" and "delete folder". Pros: Easy installation, friendly interface, quiet operation and relatively fast response. Has some cons Very wild folder hierarchy. When uploading data…

Quality is top notch, happy with everything.

I met Synology at work, this brand has proven itself well as reliable and practical devices. These devices have been working for years 24/7/365, without failures, without problems - that's why it was decided to buy a Synology device for home. My wife is a marketing designer, and carrying all the developments on an external usb drive was simply not safe, and not practical. Often she forgot this disk at home or in the office at work, which reduced the productivity of work, and gave a slight…

Pros
  • 1) Adequate design. Have you seen the design of QNAP at all? Yes, this is a complete freak compared to the Synology DS218 with its matte black case, an order of magnitude more beautiful. Network storage in matte color, looks very good in any design or place. 2) In the DSM 7 version, the web interface was fixed, the interface is intuitive, a nice bonus is the addition of widgets with statistics. 2022 interface is also present. 3) Adequate support. When setting up a backup of photos from devices, I turned to support for help. Support responded quickly, in 2022, clearly. 4) Free DAmazon, and built-in OpenVPN. Special thanks for these two features that help you connect to the NAS safely and quickly. 5) A large number of services, namely: smb, afp, nfs, ftp (ftps), rsync, tftp, webdav, dlna. 6) Personal cloud from office. This is the best that a Taiwanese company could come up with. A complete analogue of Google Drive or disk. At any time, you can connect via the web interface to your personal cloud - nas, and edit or print the file, without purchasing a license for MS Office. 7) Synology Disk Station DS218 has 2Gb of RAM, and a relatively weak processor, which can be seen when indexing files and photos, movies, but you just have to wait and it's a pleasure to work. On younger devices, it is generally impossible to work in the web interface when using the storage to the maximum. Which once again proves that the DS218 is good in terms of price = quality. 8) Ability to connect additional external devices: ip-cameras, printers, hdd/sdd. 9) Security - having a built-in antivirus, a safe settings test and support from developers and technical support, helps keep your data safe. 10) File versioning.
Cons
  • 1) This is the low performance of this model, on the official website it is indicated as more than 112 mb / s when reading and 112 mb / s when writing. Even with a gigabit local network, with large files, you feel a slight slowdown (when working with psd, you don’t feel it). 2) Light clicks when exiting sleep mode (most likely it's the HDD). 3) Slow applications for mobile devices, it's not clear why they can't fix the upload-download speed in mobile applications, it seems they are not very important for them. 4) Lack of on-demand file synchronization on MAC (similar to working with OneDrive Windows 10). Due to the fact that a constant connection to the device, like smb, loads the network, then on a laptop outside the home, a personal cloud Synology Drive is used. Client for MAC OS, does not support downloading files on demand, but synchronizes the entire folder. 5) with DSM 7 disabled full compatibility of MS Office and Synology Office, you have to convert to a special synology format. 6) No option to disable quickconnect. To access for some users. Which is not safe when using this functionality.

Good quality product, the price is commensurate with the quality.

In general, a good device that works great. Out of the box, it has a fairly large set of applications, in principle, covering all the needs of a home NAS user. Of the direct positives, one can note the work of support. They respond quickly, the answer is written in two languages. I liked the support. Some pros: Small size for a two drive device. Completely silent. Cooler settings minimum performance. The soft shell, the operating system is not bad at all, quite nicely simple, visual…

Great device, but it will take a day to figure it out. I used to have two simpler network disk devices (Seagate Personal Cloud WD My Cloud) - they were much easier to figure out. Pros below: 1. After I figured everything out - a surprisingly convenient and useful device. Works fast, does not slow down. Download speed - 80-100 megabytes per second. 2. Instructions for the first connection - very clear and simple. Only after this connection you get a working and connected device. But not at all…

I gave five stars because it is exactly what I need. You should do some serious research before investing in such things. 1) I am NOT using this for a media server, although it may serve that purpose. 2) See 1. :) So. This is how I use it and in what situation it gets 5 out of 5 from me. * I have a mirrored system with RAID 1. That means I have TWO 8TB drives because mirroring duplicates doesn't give more spaces. *Synology unit is powered off 5 days a week.*On Saturday/Sunday we do a full…

I replaced my old Synology NAS SD212j with this one to improve speed and storage space. The old one worked perfectly for 7 years. The new DS281j version has moderately faster hardware, so I expect a slight performance boost. I installed two 4TB WD Red drives in the new unit instead of the 2TB in the old one. Installing from disk is easy and takes 10 minutes. Plug the device into the mains and connect it to the network with the supplied Cat 5e Ethernet cable. Launch the available "Synology…

Attention, Synology has access to your data

Attention. Synology has full access to all your data. When installing you give them rights to your data! According to you, you are looking for information on how to read debug logs. The log file is just a Linux kernel dump in a double archive. We'll open it with 7Zip and once you go down a few levels you'll see the full folder/file structure. Almost every file in these folders can be opened with a text editor (we use Notepad++). Please note that they are not very user friendly unless you know…

Reliable and easy to use. Great entry-level NAS!

I was hesitant to buy a local storage device for my home, thinking that with all the cloud services out there, I didn't really need it. I am very happy with this model. It works well and is very easy to set up and use. Failed drives are easy to replace. I was able to download all my old home videos that I had previously re-dubbed to DVD onto this unit. My wife and I can upload all of our digital photos from our smartphones, freeing up storage space on our phones. Memories is a great app for…

Amazingly easy setup and much more than just storage

A few days ago I bought and set up a Synology 2 disk storage device. Let me tell you it was worth every penny. The first thing that struck me was the ease of setup. It works with its own Linux distribution called DSM, I haven't played around with that part much. But Web Config's interface is amazingly simple, and they have a huge number of apps available that can be installed with the click of a button. Packages like Wordpress, Drupal, iDrive backup, PHP, Perl, Apache, Plex, Git Server…

I really like this NAS system!

I got the NAS after a long recommendation from my good friend. I was hesitant at first, but when I realized my Seagate 3TB external hard drive was about to fail, I got the system right away. I installed two 8TB drives and absolutely fell in love with all of Synology's software and user interface. I set my photos, videos and VPN as the main gateway. I constantly connect to my mobile phone or my NAS at work when I need to download something instead of doing it on my work computer or just…

Ideal NAS for a Typical Home Network Server - Update

I've been using this DS218j for about a week now and it meets my needs very well. I just needed a place to store photos, music, and videos on my network, and a place to back up shared data files. I also wanted something to control a couple of security cameras. For media servers and surveillance applications, memory usage is around 45% and CPU usage is low, averaging around 10%. I have a couple of 2T drives configured as RAID1 (changed to RAID1 with standard SHR for better performance and…

Not for Mac! best in datastore

Hidden in the technical details is the fact that it only supports the ext4 filesystem and not BTRFS (unlike DS218 and DS218+). This means you cannot control the size of the folder. If you use this with a Mac, Time Machine will eat up the entire drive. If you want to use one part for a time machine and the rest for something else (like paintings), you can't. To manage quotas you need BTRFS support. With Synology's very patient tech support, it only took about three hours to figure it out. If you

Not all that bad, but there are minuses.

To my great regret, the active use of the NAS is associated with constant disappointment and communication with support, and this is still a pleasure. For a year of use, I still could not understand what the NAS is good for (except that it downloads torrents quickly because of fast drives). If I made the decision to buy now, then buying a NAS would prefer a subscription to a cloud service for storing files and photos + I would buy a media player with hdmi to watch movies. All other NAS'a…

Pros
  • The first month was interesting to delve into the settings and be surprised by unexpected nice features. Separately, I note the efficiency of support - they always respond quickly.
Cons
  • After a month of use, the euphoria was gone. Iron is iron, and the software is very crude. For example, the Drive application, torn from Google, at first glance has extensive functionality, but in reality it turned out to be very inconvenient. I shared the park with a photo with friends and threw a link - Drive requires each friend to install a mobile application, since it does not have a mobile web version. Automatic photo backup to the cloud through the moments app works every other time. Sometimes you go into the application and see that the last backup happened a month ago. The QuickConnect feature allows you to connect to the NAS via the Internet. But if someone watches a movie from the NAS on the TV via a media server (DLNA), then when connected via QuickConnect, the movie is interrupted. Once the QuickConnect settings crashed while I was on a trip and I could not connect to the NAS for the whole trip (well, not a long one). Such small nuances that spoil life - in bulk. To confirm my words, look at the rating of Synology applications on google play - there is not a single application with a rating higher than 3.8.
