Ethereum (ETH) is a relatively new crypto currency released in 2015. It has the second largest market capitalization among all crypto currencies, although it is still a long distance from Bitcoin which is 5 times larger. Ethereum is designed on a different technology from Bitcoin called blockchain. Bitcoin was developed as a currency, to be used like ordinary money, and Ethereum is also a platform and programming language that can be used to build and run applications. As such, Ethereum has a different purpose. Miners, who contribute computing power either to the creation of new blocks or to transaction processing, are rewarded with new crypto-tokens called ether. Ether can be traded and used to run applications. As a tradable instrument Ethereum is performing well and has grown to become the largest altcoin on the market. Ethereum units can be bought or sold against other crypto currencies or against fiat currencies such as USD or Euros
