This basket appears to be well made from fairly heavy gauge stainless steel and welded together. A hook welded to the mesh at the bottom is convenient for draining the oil after frying food. The mesh is thin enough to hold almost anything, although some fairly small bits of loose breading, flour, or cornmeal can get through while frying. The oil stayed pretty clean of dirt when I used it. The overall diameter of the basket at the top is 7 1/4 inches, but since the 1/8 inch diameter ring around the hole adds that 1/4 inch to the top dimension, this entire basket fits a 55 year old perfectly. I have a Revere-Ware pan that is 7 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep. The combination makes a great little fryer that I can now control the temperature of the oil in, and the size is just perfect for small batches of french fries, catfish nuggets (or a whole fillet if cut lengthwise), or pretty much anyone Cut. Chicken. The only thing I had to figure out was how much oil to add before I risked spilling the oil the first time I put the grocery basket in. I've found that the oil level at about 2/3 full (or slightly higher) is pretty safe and risk free. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.
