my problem is finding a 4 inch caliper with a real dial. Most 4 inch calipers have a small knurled plug that looks a bit like an adjustment wheel but isn't really. I'm having a hard time getting sufficiently accurate readings with a simple sliding motion. The wheel offers much better control, especially in tight spaces. So a few years ago I bought a 4" caliper, a Grizzly or something similar. The size was good - much smaller than the usual 6" size, good for working in tight spaces, which of course is the main advantage of the 4". -Size is. But it didn't have a wheel. It was later damaged by hydrochloric acid fumes, and I didn't like it enough to replace it with a similar one. This Anytime 4" has a proper thumb wheel. But aside from the length, it's the proportions of a 6" caliper. So compared to the regular 4" caliper we're all familiar with, this thing is huge. See the photo. It might be too big for the kind of use I had in mind. Sometimes I want to get in there between the milling machine spindle and the bench vise... and this 4" caliper is almost as chunky as any of my 6" calipers to choose between big and chunky with wheel or small and comfortable without wheel.
