Review on Gates TCKWP257A Engine Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump: Ultimate Timing Solution by Juan Simpson

Water pump failed in 4 months

If you've changed the timing belt and water pump, you know it's a day's work. I bought this particular kit because of the Gates brand. As far as I can tell, Gates only makes the belt. The rest appear to be cheap imitations. The water pump failed after just four months and around 3,500 miles due to a bearing seal. First of all, this pump, while faithful to the design, is not exactly identical to the original Asin/Toyota. The original has an outlet that allows coolant to drain from the pump bearing drain hole to the outside of the timing belt cover. This has no outlet so if the bearing leaks it will leak into the timing belt and pulley area and then out again. A coolant leak caused some of the belt material to "stick" to the idler pulley and idler pulley. Gates referred me back to Revain for warranty service and Revain immediately sent me a new kit. Everything is fine, but now I have to send the old one back. Now I have reworked all the work because of an inferior product. I suggest you buy a genuine Toyota/Asin water pump/kit.
