The latch holding the AA battery compartment looks like it's about to snap if you open it, but that's ok. Once you get past this, it's a great addition to emergency preparedness, reducing your need to have D cells on hand when you've otherwise standardized on AA. Cell batteries is that the spring pressure holds the AA in place inside, meaning electrical contact can be lost during an overload. When they are standing it's not a problem at all, but I vigorously moved the lantern inside with them and the light started flickering due to intermittent communication. Just something to note.
