Have the Crayloa crayons changed?

I grew up in the late 70's and early 80's and my mother kept me and my brother busy with art projects. One of the things she taught us was how to make a drawing board using Crayola crayons. It's when you take colored crayons and paint with colored blocks and then go through everything with black crayon. Once that's done you can take a sharp object like a pen cap and draw something on it. This is an old homemade version that is sold commercially today. I should add that it worked great with the Cray-Pas Junior Artist Oil Pastels that I bought at the same time as these crayons, so I fixed my art. Photo 5 is the same oil pastel project so it's not user error and was used with Crayola colored pencils. Paper with blue watercolor paint. Nostalgia was running through my head recently and the Crayola crayons were super CHEAP that day so I ordered this box of 24 thinking I was going to relive the fun of childhood. NO. What happened to the Crayola colored pencils? None of the projects worked the way they used to. The crayons felt weird and smudged and I don't recall them feeling like this in the past. Has the wax been changed? I swear it's something else. These crayons are no better than the non-original, much larger box of crayons I can buy from Dollar Tree. I gave up the colorful crayon project because it's impossible to get black crayons to go over the colors. The watercolor didn't work because the colored pencil had absorbed some of the paint. The rock I colored with a white pen and the bubbles coming out of the fish mouth soaked up the blue color to the point where the only way to tell was to hold the paper against the light to hold and see the wax . Needless to say I was very disappointed with the quality of these crayons and will not be buying Crayola again.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
