I don't think it's safe for pet birds to get tangled in the hanging wire or get cut on sharp edges... so instead I removed the wire entirely and the peanut flooded crate and set them on deck for the blue jays. They love it and it keeps them entertained for quite a while while trying to fish for peanuts. They knocked the box over several times, but it seems to have survived the fall without any problems. I wouldn't recommend mounting it on a high surface - I don't know if it can fall hard on the ground as they will inevitably push it to get the peanuts out. The mockingbirds didn't show any interest, so maybe it's just a jay. Also, the jays couldn't figure out how to get the peanuts when I hung them on the tree, I think because they don't have hooked beaks. I hung in the tree with almost no activity for a week. After I took it off, completely removed the wire and placed it on the floor, it suddenly became a fun little puzzle for her. (Assume there are no cats in the yard! Terrain. Yikes.)
