Review on πŸ”’ Dutton-Lainson 6121 Black Trailer Spare Tire Carrier: Secure and Convenient Solution for Your Trailer's Spare Tire by Chris Anderson

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not suitable for the average boater

The only reason I gave this unit 2 stars is because it was bolted to my trailer and the spare tire was attached to it. I installed a spare wheel holder on my boat trailer and noticed two things I didn't like about it. First, it keeps the tire too low to the ground so when I step outside the tire scratches the pavement. There is no way to adjust the holder or tilt the tire to prevent this. Second, and perhaps more seriously, the design of the product does not allow the chain to be passed through the hole in the spare wheel hub to attach it to the trailer frame. There is a tiny hole in the center of the replacement mounting plate that is too small for a chain or even a regular cable lock, but there is enough room for a 1" diameter hole to solve this problem. The plate is large enough to block the hub hole in the spare wheel. I called DL support and asked how they recommend fitting the tire to the trailer but they were no help. Spare wheel theft from the launch stations is commonplace here, so a lock is essential. I finally found a master lock with a cable called Python that goes through a tiny hole in the mounting plate. I would also give this lock 2 stars as I had trouble turning the cylinder with the key (yes it was thoroughly greased) and noticed that all the demos at Lowe's had the keys broken off in the lock cylinder. Something is wrong with the lock, but it's the only option I've found for this replacement holder. ?ie=UTF8&qid=1371819681&sr=8-1&keywords=master+cable
