a year ago . When we first went on holiday we set the thermostat to a warmer temperature while we were away. When we got home the house smelled like stale cigarette smoke. We had no idea beforehand that the previous owners were smokers! I quickly researched activated carbon filters and settled on them because we also have a child with allergies. (We also installed a UV lamp in the duct that was installed by previous owners.) After using this filter, the air smelled cleaner when it wasn't circulating as much, and when I pulled it out to clean it (through the same guy) to replace the filters smelled of smoke. The next change still smelled slightly, but not as strong. Last time we left the house for a long time, it was much cleaner when we got home. I will stay with them for a long time as they certainly help purify our air.
