We've just bought a new wood stove and haven't decided on a stone or fireplace cushion yet, so basically we just have a concrete floor and a rug. Buying a stove mat was recommended (by the installers) as a good safe option while we're using the wood stove this winter. So far it has withstood the little sparks that fly out of the oven when we open the door. Can't say for sure if it's really fire retardant as I haven't seen it but I like the rug. It was a quick and inexpensive way to protect my carpet from fire.
