For many years I have used a plastic salinity hydrometer. It disturbs the fish and is a bit messy. When it dries the floating needle gets stuck and I have to wet it and then shake it to let it move freely. It worked (sort of) but I wasn't comfortable getting accurate readings. I've also heard for years that a refractometer is the best way to measure salinity. However, the price put me off and I got the impression that tricky sizing is a must. It sounded like a laboratory instrument that would require constant attention. Wrong in every way. The price of this (about $15) costs a little more than the plastic version. Calibration was easy - place a few drops of reverse osmosis water on the glass, close the flap, look through the viewing window and turn the screw until the line reads zero. Here it is. Using it is even easier since you do the same thing with tank water but without the calibration step. The whole process only takes a few seconds. It's certainly easy to use, but you'll need to hold it up to a brighter light to get a clear reading. There is a blue line showing the exact salinity. No guesses or estimates. I would highly recommend it to the serious marine aquarium enthusiast.
