New to marine aquariums so I found I would need something similar to measure the amount of salt in the water. For the price I went ahead and bought it. After watching a few videos, it was easy to learn how to use and has had consistent results. Essential for saltwater pools where this is a major problem. Feels solid and not cheap. I expect this to continue for years.

I ordered a refractometer specifically to check the salinity in my saltwater aquarium. I received a refractometer with a different scale than the one described. The chart in it was for sodium/chlorine on a 0 to 25 scale. I'm sure I can use it, but I don't have to try any conversions and hence loss of accuracy. I've also lost time on returns and tried to order a new one when it wasn't what was described in the listing.

This was a great purchase and I have used it when adding artificial water toppers and setting up new aquariums. Hawaiian opae require 1/2 the salinity of the ocean and I have found that some breeding tanks are more successful than others. By noting the properties of the water, pH, ammonia, temperature, alkalinity, etc., I can optimize your environment. This tool takes the guesswork out of salinity and is also used in field studies. The product arrived on time but when I opened the package I noticed that the gray box it came in was already open and all the contents were scattered all over the box . I also noticed in the instructions that there was supposed to be an eyedropper to collect water and apply a few drops to the test device, but there was none. So I just went and bought a cheap eyedropper to replace what didn't come with it. The device itself seemed to work 9/10 times so I ALWAYS test twice.

After hours of trying to figure out what I'm seeing, I think I get it. I assume it's Brix. Equation SG = 1 + ((Brix * 4)/1000). A simpler way to think about it is to just multiply the reading by 4 and append to the end of 1,000. .Example: The reading was 5, so 5*4=20, SG= 1.020. Of course, I can't verify that because my SG should be 1.020, so it's 1.014. Now should I waste my time with this thing or should I buy a new one? I really hate false advertising. What an awful product.

The reading was accurate prior to using the calibration solution and has therefore been accurately calibrated. Easy to use, solid construction, would recommend. If you are confident that they are calibrated correctly, consider purchasing a calibration solution. The solution itself is not expensive, but it is not cheap either. For many years I have used a plastic salinity hydrometer. It disturbs the fish and is a bit messy.
