Review on QNAP TS 230 Cortex A53 Quad Core Processor by Bob Walters

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great budget NAS for media backup and sharing

The TS-230 is a great budget solution as the RTS1296 processor with 2GB RAM is included in the Synology DS218 which costs $71 more. It looks good with a modern light blue (Hatsune Miku) design and badge shape LEDs. (Other NAS have rectangular LEDs with symbols printed on them.) The trays can hold hard drives in place with screws and snap rails. It's great for backup and media sharing (as a network drive) for the PC. Hybrid Backup Sync and Qsync Central are well-made programs that always work flawlessly. It didn't show any significant lag even when playing videos while doing 3 backups. I think it's fine for home use. The USB copy button is also very useful. However, multimedia applications are not satisfactory. The Plex Media Server works with 1080p video in limited file formats, but you won't need it if you have a decent PC with Potplayer. AI-powered QuMagie is nothing more than a joke because it doesn't understand that a person can't be featured twice in the same photo. I got very upset when I posted a photo of my son's senior year. He asked me endlessly if any child was my son. In addition, the case is not soundproof. It reproduces the noise of the hard disk.

Cons
