Review on πŸ“Ά NETGEAR C7800 High-Speed Modem (Legacy Model) by Michael Boyce

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Excellent modem/router for DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Internet

Purchased for use with Comcast Gigabit Internet (DOCSIS 3.1) as a replacement for the XB6 modem that Comcast comes with rented the service, and overall I am very happy with the purchase. Installation was very easy via Comcast's self-activation website by following the instructions in the quick start guide that came with it. The LEDs on the left side of the device conveniently glow white for 1000 Mbps Ethernet connections or amber for 10/100 Mbps connections. My PC's download speed over a wired connection is 900-950 Mbps and upload speed is 40-42 Mbps (the service is advertised as up to 1 Gbps download and 35 Mbps upload). My smartphone and other devices connected via 5 GHz WiFi average 300-400 Mbps downstream and 35-42 Mbps downstream. The wired connection speed is comparable to what I had on the XB6 and the WiFi speed on the C7800 was consistently faster and more stable. I can't say much about the range as I have a fairly small space on both modems I use with the service and have a stable WiFi connection everywhere. The Netgear Genie's interface is intuitive, if a bit slow to navigate. and change all the different settings. I can't say anything about additional features either, since I didn't have to change anything out of the box apart from the WLAN passwords. Ultimately I wanted to avoid renting equipment and wanted a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with an integrated router and at least 4 Ethernet ports (vs only 2 on the XB6) to connect my PC, TV and gaming consoles. It currently (July 2017) seems to be the only device on the market that meets all my needs and works as expected. when Revain sold it outright for $325, which contributed to my five-star rating as excellent value. At that price point, I thought it was a good deal since a separate DOCSIS 3.1 modem and router with similar specs bought together would be closer to the $400 MSRP. At full price I would probably rate it 4 stars as you have quite a few options and could potentially save money if you don't mind buying two separate units and buying the modem and router separately.

Pros
  • Modem router combo
Cons
  • Not as good as it says
