K&N Typhoon Air Intake

K&N provides a torque sheet showing the horsepower improvement; By the way, you can read it online. However, it has many flaws that do not allow me to trust the results. It shows an increase of 10 hp. at 4500 rpm, which is highlighted. There is a larger increase of 12-14 hp. at 5500 rpm, which was not taken into account in their diagram. There were only 2 separate runs with the same car with exactly the same kilometers only 1 second apart. Should be an average of multiple runs. It's amazing that someone can change a filter so quickly, or even complete a run of a dynamometer so quickly; The dyno sheet gives you the test time, temperature and humidity in the test area. The climate system or the weather really did change that quickly in a second. Anyway, I could go on, but you get what I mean. It's supposed to be a cold air intake, but it's aluminum. Aluminum transfers heat very quickly, so the temperature of the engine bay also heats the air in the duct that draws in cooler air from below, negating any benefit of drawing in colder, denser air from below. My intake manifold was too hot to touch for more than a second. Insulation could help here. I compared the size of a standard tube with k & n, didn't appreciate the big difference in the overall size of the cross section. I didn't have access to a dyno so I measured the real time in 2nd gear at 2000rpm to the red zone. The average time to KN was between 5.8 and about 6 seconds. The time after KN was 5.0-5.65 seconds. There are no special improvements. It doesn't feel any difference either. I'm considering reinstalling my box. However, there can be a synergistic improvement with an exhaust that has more flow to match the increased intake flow. I will gut the 3rd catalytic converter in the exhaust system and check the timing again later. The sound depends on personal preference. It's louder at full throttle with a harsher sound. I also hear some of the usual air hissing noise on lighter throttle, which the box hides well. In my opinion a medium throttle at medium RPM sounds best. My first run record was 25.2mpg down from my usual 24.5-26mpg. However, I was very hard on the gas. So there may actually be a slight increase in mpg.

Pros
  • TOW ENHANCEMENT: Improves acceleration and climb performance when towed by improving throttle response.
Cons
  • No Automatic
