Sometimes a round shank just doesn't fit. In this case I needed a quarter inch drive, 2 inch bits to use as grinding mandrels. Used in a hand drill when grinding on a lathe. While round shanks usually work, hex shanks ensure the hole doesn't crack if the grinding pressure gets too high. Shank edges to bite into the wood but not so small that it splits. And of course, hex shanks leave more room for glue (superglue or epoxy works best for this application). Cargo bits for this purpose before I've seen these much better quality DeWalt bits.
