Sometimes a round shank just doesn't fit. In this case I needed a quarter inch drive, 2 inch bits to use as grinding mandrels. Used in a hand drill when grinding on a lathe. While round shanks usually work, hex shanks ensure the hole doesn't crack if the grinding pressure gets too high. Shank edges to bite into the wood but not so small that it splits.
