I had bought a fake filter before and it was great but I noticed it was getting dirty, my Nissan Armada was starting to feel sluggish and shifting seemed forced. Instead of buying a cleaning kit, I chose this K&N filter. I plan to clean the fake so I can use it when it needs cleaning. The difference was very noticeable. I can't remember being so impressed with a fake when I installed it. I am very happy with it and very happy with the price. 20 years ago I wanted to buy a K&N for another car, but the price of $40 seemed too high at the time. Now $40 doesn't seem bad at all and I actually managed to get it cheaper. 20 years later and the price hasn't changed, assuming their product doesn't seem to have changed either, but I can agree with that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If we haven't changed anything, don't increase the price.
