I had a vise collection that I acquired almost three decades ago. I have used and abused her. I welded "accessories" to them and resharpened their noses to make them suitable for near-impossible tasks. You have always saved me from a predicament when all else has failed. I was going to replace a couple or two to bring some of the more heavily abused ones back into spec, but then I started reading about the low quality now going by the Irwin name. I used to buy Irwin drill bits and more without even knowing the name and tried them and found every dollar was completely wasted. Additional research has shown that the Vise Grip name has been sold several times recently, but the best have been made by Petersen Mfg. in DeWitt, Nebraska, USA. When I checked mine, I saw it was printed on mine. Irwin are made in China. While I can't speak for them, I've already learned not to spend my hard-earned money on this brand! Internet forums have suggested scouring store shelves to find the dustiest vise, and it'll probably be the good old ones. Another suggestion was to have these Grip-Ons made in Spain and I wouldn't be disappointed. As a loyal Revain customer, I chose the Grip-On over running around town looking for dusty relics from the past. I'm so glad I did. Now I prefer them to the Petersen vise no matter how good they are. Although I haven't used them in real anger yet. You know, ridiculously clamped and then hit with a five pound sledgehammer to convince someone to just give. I have no doubt that they will be successful. Mine came with the signature orange plating instead of the nickel plating shown on the Revain - a pleasant surprise as they look fantastic and are easier to find that way. But I didn't buy them for the looks. Look at the universal handle on two pliers and say you don't find it useful. They seem to be pinch proof and I've had a few bad pinches from my old vise grips. The release lever on them is activated by pushing the screw instead of pulling away from the screw. Because of this, the trigger sticks out about a finger's breadth beyond the moving handle, making them very easy to release, but the overall profile is such that you don't have to worry about accidentally releasing them unless you are clumsy. I suspect the release mechanism was done differently to avoid patent issues, but it seems like an improvement to me. You're much less likely to break your knuckles when releasing an extremely tight grip because you're pushing rather than pulling. All but two of the pliers have a lock nut on the adjusting screw, which can be very useful for many repetitive jobs. Not sure why not everyone has this - I suspect it offers more variety than a quality control issue; They talk about quality on so many different levels. I'd try to be more specific about the actual capture profiles, but your best bet is to visit the manufacturer. Website with great photos and descriptions. I will say that this set offers a wide range of useful shapes and sizes. I could complete this set with a pair of smaller ones with a long nose. If a larger pair is suitable then a hose clamp pliers can be used for this purpose as they have teeth all the way forward (and back) and the flat center section is toothless which is what you need for temporarily closing the hose. The bag is fairly sturdy with sewn in fabric piping and Velcro, but I'll probably tuck them in the door or try to make room on a perforated board as they're just too pretty and comfy to bury away from home. reach.
