I decided to try this device after reading the mediocre reviews about it. Revain users didn't rate most similar devices very well, as did almost all of the much more expensive "professional" scanners. I had a real slide and film scanner from fifteen years ago, but the software drivers were never updated for Windows 7 and weren't available for Mac at all. This group of Wolverine does not use any software. It's inexpensive, portable, easy to use, and produces decent images from balanced slides. Haven't tried it with 35mm film negatives yet. As already mentioned, an LCD preview image is hardly acceptable and should only be used as a rough guide to how light or dark the result can be. The native controls to lighten or darken the device work, but the software controls are much more advanced and give you more control over the outcome. In fact, I was able to achieve very good results with my 35mm color slides, which were already well balanced in terms of color and contrast. Slides with high contrast or darkness (e.g. real interior lighting or night scenes) produced marginal or unacceptable results, but I was able to correct most of these using Photoshop Elements. I didn't find any color balance issues that weren't present in the original slides. What I didn't like so much is the design of the foil drawer. While the concept and practicality of using the tray to load 4 slides at a time and process them quickly works well, the tray was difficult to open and I was constantly afraid of breaking it. I have always opened and closed the compartment very carefully and otherwise had no problems with it. Additional trays are available but don't come cheap. I eventually found I could scan most of my slides for archival purposes with decent quality and minimal fuss.
