This lock "looks" impressive, has a decent heft and it made from materials that appear weather resistant.I am happy with these locks and feel these will provide medium security for me."medium security" meaning: visible security coupled with enough strength to withstand a mischievous attempt at entry.A determined well equipped thief will defeat these locks - but if that was your goal you would not be looking at 1/4 shackle locks.My opinion is these locks provide protection from: * the "honest" person who might be tempted at theft if they stumbled upon unguarded valuables. * the mischievous thief (kid) who on a lark or dare wants to attempt a theft.The locks are made from rust resistant material that might provide a few years of use out in the elements.Not sure they could provide a lifetime of use in the elements the way brass might.A possible downside to this lock is the "viewing" window dial your combination is on the short side of the rectangular case. The side location is not a problem for most locking applications but it is something to keep in mind.The method to set the combination is pretty standard.Unlock the lock, turn shackle to side press full downward until it clicks, then rotate shackle towards the locking position.The end of shackle is now outside the lock but at the level it would be if locked.set the dials to your desired number and rotate shackle back and pull upward so shackle is once again in its normal swing plane.
