I'm a finishing carpenter. Sometimes I have to paint things to fit right on the walls/chimneys etc. So I figured I could mark the gaps in the 1 to 1/16 inch range. I could do it with that, but with great difficulty. I needed something I could just glue to the wall, find where the gap was the biggest, and draw a line to follow the outline of the wall to cut and match. With that I would have to slide it back about an inch and double check that everything is level and secured for my mark. I like it for a small protractor, though.
