Yes I could and used garden twine to tie my tomatoes to their supports. This year I decided to treat myself and buy a few rolls of these. Very handy for keeping electrical cords handy indoors (I used to buy something similar/more permanent from BigLots that sells with Christmas supplies.) Double sided velcro is also great at the end of the season to secure my tomato shelves (otherwise behind the bush to the to lean against the wall of the house!) to tie tightly, neatly and vertically. But back to that product. The fact is, there are a lot of indeterminate tomatoes out there. You'll be there in the heat, picking runners and training your plants to maximize production It's a lot easier to go out with a bunch of precut Velcro and get your thing done quickly than struggling with pieces of yarn that stretch under tension or the like which seized up after weeks/months of sun and rain. The green velcro fits perfectly into the look, so it's an aesthetic value. You can easily attach smaller pieces together to create a larger piece later if needed, and it's very easy to move this tape around as the plant grows, so there's no real waste. I did some thinking (compostable yarn vs plastic) and figured out how much I'm spending on yarn (disposable despite my promise to reuse it) versus this ribbon that can be used for multiple seasons if not longer. I then considered the time savings, comfort and health of my plants (they thrive much better when I don't procrastinate and when you know it's all done quickly and in a timely manner). All in all, this is the cutest little vegetable patch I've ever looked at (I gave up the Florida weave and make tomatoes a singles or doubles leader at high stakes). My peppers and aubergines look great too, also attached to their stakes with this ribbon. They need support at the end of the season when they are laden with fruit. I've also used other types of tomato supports (white plastic "tomato trellis" clips and green spring-loaded "clothespin" types). They work well when the main stem is growing parallel to the support ring, but not so well when your stem is supported at an angle (they slide over the round stakes I use). I still like the ones that support the roses on the trellis and the like. Velcro is just more flexible (literally), infinitely adjustable, and you can use two pieces in an X configuration if needed. So thumbs up - quality of life improvement in no time :)
