Reliable drives for my NAS

A year ago, I bought eight WD SE 4TB drives to go with my Synology DiskStation 8-bay NAS (DS1813+). Use as a media server for music, photos and HD movies. The server has been working flawlessly for a year. Very happy with the overall performance. I have old backup servers etc which are not that reliable (disk failure) but there is never more than one at any given time. No crashes with these drives.

6 year old disc presented as new - no guarantee, do not buy!

This drive worked for two months before it failed. The Rack-It-Solutions seller presented it as new with a five-year warranty. When I contacted Revain they said to contact the seller, when I contacted the seller they said to contact Western Digital. That's when I found out that the drive was 6 years old and no longer supported by WD. Of course it was new (not used) but it certainly wasn't under warranty and barely worked.

4 out of 8 failures in the last 4 months

In the last 4 months, four Western Digital 4TB enterprise hard drives have failed. All were about 3 years old. They start throwing read errors on my RAID system and eventually fail. During that time I lost RAID integrity twice, meaning one drive failed, and when the system was restored with a new drive, the second failed, completely wiping the RAID data. Luckily it was just my automatic backup device and nothing else failed, but if it had been my main data drive it could still have beenโ€ฆ

Solid Performer is the best among computers and accessories

I've had this CD for over a month now. I found him reliable and he will do the job I give him. I use it in an external enclosure (from OWC) connected to my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2014) to store videos from my Canon XA-10 (on the same partition) and videos with Final Cut Pro X to process in another .The drive is fast, and while I don't upload long 10 gigabyte videos to it, I do push the drive to render and export at least a few gigabytes of files.Through this type of work, myself on At aโ€ฆ

Great NAS drive (but be careful with the mounting holes)

Bought a few of these drives for my QNAP NAS. The performance is excellent and they are not too loud. Revain packaged them well and I haven't had any issues with damage from rough handling during shipping. These drives were shipped overseas, so I'm even more impressed. Note that when mounting these drives using the 6-32 threaded holes on the bottom of the device, be aware that they are smaller than other drives. The 3/16" pan head screws that came with my NAS were TOO LONG to securely mount the

2 disks, 0 problems so far

I haven't had any problems with these se disks for 6 months. Normally with hard drives I would expect one to fail within the first month or after more than 5 years to fail. I'm not a data addict either so I use a couple of these 4TB drives in RAID 1 just in case. These drives are not used much in my application. I originally ordered them with the intention of using them on a busy server, but I had a more pressing need for a NAS unit so they ended up selling large files. It's the technicalโ€ฆ

Great drives for NAS

I use (8) of these in my Synology NAS and the performance is just great. I'm using SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) and the drives just keep working. I upgraded my original 2TB WD SE drives to these 4TB in about a year or a year and a half or so. The first one I bought lasted almost 47,400 hours, that's 1,975 days or 5.41 years, and it's still working. One of the drives failed for me after about 37,000 hours. I pulled it out, replaced it with a new one, the NAS did its job, rebuilt the array andโ€ฆ

Not a very good drive in data storage

I bought 2 of these drives in April 2017 and registered them with WD (please note this drive has a 5 year warranty). In January 2020, one of the drives failed SMART testing. I was able to get an RMA through WD; It took 2 weeks to replace the hard drive. Right now (October 2020) the second drive has failed. This time WD won't leave me an RMA; I tried speaking to someone at WD but this guy was clueless and didn't agree with the RMA so I decided to buy another manufacturer's drive. like that . one

Awesome drive!: Computers and accessories

Pros: This drive has a lot of space. Having searched for a drive that is TRIM capable but not onerous (like a RE-class drive), I'd say it strikes a great balance of enterprise-class performance and massive storage. The disc itself is similar to the Western Digital RED series but not limited by the number of discs. Not wanting to leave the enterprise drive market, Western Digital configured the RED series to work with 5 bays (or less). Anything beyond that and you're usually limited to noโ€ฆ
