The 2.4 GHz band never worked and newer devices still use this band.

This is a dual band router but the 2.4GHz band never worked. I configured profiles for both bands, but the 2.4GHz band doesn't show up in WiFi discovery. At first I didn't think about it. All my devices used the 5 GHz band and worked fine. Then a few months later we tried to buy a cheap phone that only works on 2.4GHz. So I went to the web control app and checked everything and everything is fine. At this point I realized that 2.4GHz just didn't work, but it seemed to work with newer devicesโ€ฆ

Stop at RT-N66U, RT-AC87U is not an upgrade, it is a train wreck

I used to love ASUS routers. I bought this to replace an RT-N66U that worked great. I just wanted to check out ASUS' latest and greatest flagship router, so I updated it. BIG MISTAKE. The RT-AC87U is almost twice the size of the RT-N66U, and while I expected it to be larger, I was still surprised by how much larger it is. The firmware is familiar, with some additional features, but for this model it is very buggy. I mainly use Apple devices and it seemed like every time an Apple update came out

Everything I was hoping for

Have been using it for a few months. I subscribed to a VPN service (VyprVPN), so I use the router's VPN client capabilities to route most of the devices in my house through the VPN (using the OpenVPN protocol) to protect my privacy from my ISP to protect and limit my ISP's ability to throttle Internet based on what IPs I'm connected to (e.g. Sling TV, Netflix, Hulu, etc.). I started with ASUSWRT firmware (ASUS stock), but then after some research I switched to ASUSWRT MERLIN because I needed to

Powerful but a little annoying, started having problems after 2 months

I originally bought this because my previous Netgear router had problems with the number of wireless devices in my house (X-Box 360, PS4, 3 iPads , iPhone, iPod, 3-5 laptops, 2 wireless TiVos and Kindle). Connections kept dropping, especially with PS4. It also prevented the X-Box 360 from even connecting to it after a firmware update, which I tried when trying to get port forwarding for the game server to work. I solved part of this problem by making a wired connection to the entertainmentโ€ฆ
