Simple and effective

Improved sharpness in a few minutes. I filed the sides and after a few passes with a file the marks disappeared. I'm pretty sure mine is out of the box, or at least damn close. After that I did the typical scraper grinding process and got good chips. I've tested it on a fairly rough walnut that I use as knife shavings (see photo) to take some of the cracking off of hand planing with good results. I definitely support these scrapers.

Pros
  • Everything is great!

The only scraper you need.

This is a card scraper. It's sturdier than anything you buy elsewhere and holds the edge very well. If you clean a lot of hardwood, this scraper will be a boon to you. Update: I've been using it for a few months now and still enjoy using it. It picks up burrs easily and lasts long until you need to resharpen. What I like the most is that because it's so thick, you don't bend a lot when using it. This means that signs of wear on the wood are difficult to see. It covers a large area. Still a good

I seem to be a lot better at making a drill than I am at sharpening a plane!

Super good steel, just what I needed and works better than I hoped. He took the edge and made tons of shavings. It fell in the Goldy Locks zone between soft with no faults to produce a single through drill and hard to make the drill durable. This saves me hundreds of dollars a year in sandpaper and provides a better surface for gluing and finishing. Reminds me of the blue steel pocket knife my dad gave me in 1964 (I was 6 years old). it's more often."

Need to spend extra $ for sharpening tools

This item came without instructions for use. However, he points to the DFM website address for documentation and videos on usage and sharpening. In fact, sharpening is at the core of my dissatisfaction with this product. Checking the website mentioned, one can see that the product needs to be sharpened in order to be used effectively and will produce wood shavings and not just dust. Also, it turns out that for proper sharpening it is necessary to have and use additional tools, for example, a…

Not the best approach to manufacturing

I like DFM's desire to bring tool manufacturing back to the US. But these scrapers are not produced properly. They are, as it were, stamped or punched out of sheet steel. This is quality work but there is noticeable warping of the steel. You'll see it when you condition the flat edges. Bring them to a rock to smooth a flat edge and quickly see the imperfections (I used a rotating Japanese Makita rock as well as 3M diamond slabs set on a polished piece of granite to stabilize scientific…
