Hardware works, drivers are finicky, firmware supplied is defective

Installing the drivers was a challenge because the USB serial adapter was not correctly recognized by Windows. It needs CH340 driver, after installation you can access the serial port. After that, I found that the sample firmware that came with it didn't work. After flashing it with my own code, the camera worked fine, apart from an odd hiss/hiss from the camera itself that seems to track the camera's frame rate. With SRAM, it can run at the sensor's native resolution at painfully low frameโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Single Board Computer
Cons
  • There are new competitors

ESP32-CAM face recognition does not work

I like this product, but it does not serve my purpose. The Arduino CameraWebServer example program has face recognition and will not work in this case. Tried other similar programs with the same problem. This will freeze this ESP32-CAM. Everything else works and I recommend it if you only want to use it for videos and pictures. If you want to use it for face recognition projects, this won't work. There is also an issue with junk characters in Serial Monitor and I followed all the instructionsโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Computers and accessories
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors

Programming board and camera not working upon arrival

I am using Arduino 1.8.13 to program ESP32 boards. Work. I then tried the new camera board on my old TTL programmer. That didn't work either - no reaction from the camera. To make sure my TTL setting works well I tested one of the other camera boards and it worked fine. In short, not a single programmer sees the new camera board. So my conclusion is that the new camera is dead. I also tried using the serial monitor via the programming board on both the new camera board and my old camera board -

  • Computer components
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
